Food restriction and avoidance are common in individuals with gastrointestinal disorders both to control disease severity and to minimize GI discomfort. For some individuals, however, the avoidance of food becomes problematic in a way that negatively impacts physical health and psychosocial functioning. This webinar will explore when food restriction becomes maladaptive in the condition Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). It will explore possible causes and the role GI clinicians can have in identifying and treating the condition.

Learning Outcomes:

At the conclusion of this presentation, listeners will be able to:

  1. Implement evidence-based nutrition interventions for individuals with co-occurring ARFID and gastrointestinal disorders.
  2. Screen and assess for ARFID in GI practice.
  3. Recognize and support patients with co-occuring ARFID and GI disorders using patient-centered communication.
