Biography
Dr Chey received his BA degree from the University of Pennsylvania and MD & training in internal medicine at the Emory University School of Medicine. He completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Michigan. Dr Chey has remained at the University of Michigan, where he is currently the H. Marvin Pollard Professor of Gastroenterology, Professor of Nutrition Sciences, and Chief of the division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at the University of Michigan.
His research interests focus on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of gut-brain interaction and H. pylori infection. He is a medical innovator with multiple patents spanning digital health to medical devices.
Dr Chey has authored more than 500 manuscripts, reviews and book chapters. He is past Co-editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Gastroenterology (2010-2016), founding co-Editor-in-Chief of Clinical & Translational Gastroenterology and serves on the editorial boards of several other medical journals.
Dr. Chey is current President and a member of the Board of Trustees of the American College of Gastroenterology. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Rome Foundation and a member of the Editorial Board for the Rome IV and Rome V processes. He recently served as co-chair of the Rome Foundation Working Group addressing the role of food in the FGIDs. He is Vice President of the Advisory Board of the International Foundation of Functional GI Disorders and past Chair of the Clinical Practice Section (2006-2008) of the American Gastroenterological Association.
He has been elected to the roster of “Best Doctors” since 2001 and “America’s Top Doctors” since 2009. He has been identified as and in the top 1% of gastroenterologists by US News and World Report. In 2014, Dr. Chey was named as one of “160 Gastroenterologists to Know in America” by Becker’s ASC. In 2014, Dr. Chey was inducted into the Clinical Excellence Society of the Department of Internal Medicine, received the Dean’s award for Outstanding Clinician, and was inducted in the League of Research Excellence at the University of Michigan. He has also received the Disruptive Innovator Award from Healio, the Distinguished Clinician Award from the AGA, and the Berk-Fise Award for clinical excellence from the ACG. In 2025, Dr. Chey was designated a Master of the ACG.
